{"id":71,"date":"2017-10-18T15:20:47","date_gmt":"2017-10-18T15:20:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/girlsrights.org\/wp\/?page_id=71"},"modified":"2025-08-25T16:39:43","modified_gmt":"2025-08-25T16:39:43","slug":"who-we-are","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/girlsrights.org\/wp\/who-we-are","title":{"rendered":"Who we are"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><b>The Working Group on Girls (WGG)<\/b>\u00a0originated in the build-up to the tremendous efforts made in 1995 in the ratification of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action as a global agenda for the empowerment of all women and girls. Under the auspices of UNICEF, the Working Group on Girls emerged as an NGO committee within UNICEF\u00a0 and eventually connected with UN Women to grapple with the special needs of girls \u2013 who have their own struggles for equality, education, and the right to be protected from oppression in any form.\u00a0 Section L of the Beijing Platform for Action represents the efforts of WGG original members to improve the status of the Girl Child.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">That work continues today within various WGG Committees (standing bodies) and Task Forces (occasional theme-based\/time-based groupings for a specific purpose).\u00a0 Each is led by a Committee Chair (or Co-Chairs) who, together with WGG Member Organizations, work with and for girls at the United Nations.
