Advocacy Sheets

 

When volunteers from the working group on girls (WGG) schedule visits with ambassadors and/or staff members from various countries, we create and take advocacy sheets as a way to share our talking points. These resources help us to track progress over time and keep our recommendations relevant.

 Child Marriage

One in seven girls in developing countries is married before age 15, and 38 percent are married before age 18. They often marry men much older than they are.

 

 Domestic Violence and Girls

Domestic violence as experienced by girls is a growing phenomenon and gaining in recognition. Until 2009, the UK knew very little about teenagers own experiences of partner violence in their intimate relationships.

Harassment

Sexual harassment, a form of sex discrimination, includes unwelcome sexually determined behavior such as physical contact and advances, sexually colored remarks, showing pornography and sexual demand whether by words or actions.

 Honor Killings

Honor killings are acts of vengeance, usually death, most often committed by male family members  against female family members, who are held to have brought dishonor upon the family.

 Rape

Given a girl’s age, sex, submissive gender construction, social pressures to have sex, marriage, child-marriage, susceptibility to violence and abuse, social stigma, lack of protective laws, lack of protective cultures, lack of education,
sex-centered media, poverty, fear, drugs and alcohol, unstable family and, community structures, conflict, lack of sex education, she will be highly susceptible to being raped in her lifetime.

 Son Preference

The belief or actions that the lives of daughters are not worth the same as boys, which result in the abuse of the girl child through negligence in any form, including feticide.

  Trafficking

 FGM

Female genital mutilation* (FGM) is a harmful traditional practice that involves the removal of some part or all of the female genitalia. The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies FGM into 4 types.

 Girl Child Pornography

Girl child pornography is any visual depiction of female children, whether made or produced by
electronic, mechanical, or other means, where the visual depiction and production involves the use of a
minor female child engaged in sexually explicit conduct.
