2011-2012 is the second year the Working Group on Girls (WGG) is training and mentoring girls (sophomores or juniors in high school) to advocate on behalf of girls within the United Nations system. WGG Girl Advocates work with the WGG’s Girls Participation Task Force. Each year we strive to have girls involved in the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) at the United Nations. We are preparing for the 56th session of the CSW, 27 February to 9 March, 2012.

The Working Group on Girls (WGG) is dedicated to promoting the rights of girls in all areas and stages of their lives, advancing the rights and status of girls and assisting them to develop their full potential as women. The WGG advocates for the ongoing inclusion and development of girls’ rights in the work of the United Nation system and works to promote the active participation of girls as agents of change. Description:
In keeping with WGG’s commitment to promote the active participation of girls as agents of change, WGG Girl Advocates will work to “make girls visible” within the UN System. Girl advocates will have the opportunity to:
- be a girl delegate for the 56th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW-56) at the United Nations;
- learn how the UN system interacts with non-profit organizations;
- meet women and organizations actively engaged in work on girls rights;
- gain an in depth understanding of the issues and topics that affect girls and their communities around the world;
- help plan advocacy events for the UN community;
- meet with members of the UN community such as diplomats, nonprofit leaders, etc;
- participate in a WGG taskforce or committee such as the Girls Participation Taskforce; the Protecting Girls from Violence Taskforce; the Advocacy Taskforce and the CSW51 Taskforce.
Position Requirements:
- Currently a sophomore or junior in high school.
- Ability to attend and participate in the WGG membership meetings from November 2011 through June 2012. (2 to 4:00 p.m., 1st Thursday of the month in New York.)
- Ability to participate in assigned WGG taskforce or committee.
- Participation in the Girls Orientation Day for CSW-56 (tba).
- Available to attend and participate in the Commission on the Status of Women meetings from February 27 to March 9, 2012.
- Able to complete up to three hours of work per week, including meetings, required readings, and reporting.
Qualifications:
- Strong organizational & public speaking skills
- Familiarity with basic computer programs
- A deep interest in global girl issues
- Engaged in social media activism
