Girls Stand Up!
Orientation Day for CSW 55

Location: Pace University
The Working Group on Girls of the NGO Committee on UNICEF in partnership with Pace University will present an Orientation Day 20 February 2011 for girls and those who are interested in girls’ rights. This Orientation Day is intended for those who are planning to attend the 55th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) located at the UN Headquarters in New York City.
The day will prepare attendees to actively participate in CSW 55. Orientation Day presentations will focus on the theme for this year’s CSW, “Access and participation of women and girls to education, training, science and technology, including for the promotion of women’s equal access to full employment and decent work” and the review theme “The elimination of all forms of discrimination and violence against the girl child”. Breakout sessions will provide participants the opportunity to unpack the themes and to learn advocacy skills.
Speakers will include Leymah Roberta Gbowee, the Executive Director of the Women Peace and Security Network Africa. Other speakers TBA.

The Working Group on Girls (WGG) and its International Network for Girls (INfG) are dedicated to promoting the rights of girls in all areas and stages of their lives, advancing the rights and status of girls and assisting them to develop their full potential as women. The WGG and the INfG aims to ensure that national governments implement, through policy statements, program development, and resource allocation the commitments to girls’ rights made through international agreements; advocate or the ongoing inclusion and development of girls’ rights in the work of the United Nation systems and structures and promote the active participation of girls as agents of change in their own lives, families, communities and societies.
